Posting to Medium
I have written previously about my discomfort with Medium gaining ground against individual blogs. My opinion hasn’t changed and it still makes me sad to see established writers on posting Medium exclusive content. However, Medium has taken steps, through their new publishing API, to make syndicating articles to their platform from your own site easier. So I’ve taken advantage of their IFTTT integration and set up specific RSS feed to publish posts from my own site to my account on Medium.
Owning your own content does not necessarily mean refusing to use big social/publishing platforms. I think they have their place and they are great things to syndicate content and spread your reach. There’s a name, an acronym actually, for this approach, POSSE. POSSE stands for Publish (on your) Own Site, Syndicate Elsewhere, and you can read more about it at Indie Web Camp. Publishing for the world to see is a big deal, so those of us who do it should think about the long term availability of that writing. People may find stuff I’ve written syndicated to Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, or Medium, but it will always lead them back here, to my home base.
