Icons

Icons in Career Minder

I’ve always enjoyed making custom icons and illustrations for projects. In many cases it makes sense to adopt an existing icon set, but when the opportunity arises to create something unique I love to take advantage. One thing I wanted to explore with the Career Minder icons was to buck the trend of flat mono-line icons and bring some dimensionality and color into the product. I prioritized color and rounded shapes in the iconography in order to make the product feel more tactile.

Upcoming Card

Career Minder Dashboard with its Path, Horizon, and Upcoming Card

Career Minder’s dashboard is the place where the user can reorient themselves, see what they’ve done and then plan for the future. That’s why it’s divided into a Path and Horizon, with Path being where they record what they’ve done and Horizon being where they can see upcoming events. The Upcoming Card was an opportunity to take the timeline idea from the Path and and project it into the future. The Upcoming Card also serves as a place for user to go next, a Catch Up or Review, when they’ve logged in and are not sure what to do.

Miscellaneous

Animated experience prompt

In order to prompt the user when they’re recording their experience, I used animation to create an experience out of what could be a simple tooltip. It offers a moment of unexpected delight.

Some more Career Minder Details

There are lots of opportunities to spend time on little things. For example, creating visualizations for the complicated feelings have towards jobs they’ve had is a way to encourage reflection in an approachable way. Turning what could be a simple number into a a gauge with a silly almost scientific name is a way to condense a lot of experiences in a different way. Giving documents an almost analog touch turns what could be another in an endless list of tables in someone’s work day into something that might elicit a momentary grin.
